Search Technology Center Asia (STCA)

STCA was founded in year 2005 and is now starting the second “Five-Year Plan” after the merge with the Ads Platform Center in 2011. The new team has not only built up its strengths and expanded its scope, but also set a shared goal, broadened its vision, and equipped with richer resources that gives the team the confidence to scale new heights.
STCA is now focusing on the following areas: the continuous exploration of Bing search technology; the technical innovation of online advertisement services; the development of the MSN social platform; and the development of mobile search applications. Today, STCA has hundreds of excellent employees and is the largest R&D team of the Microsoft Online Service Division outside the United States.

Roles & Responsibilities

Online Advertising is one of the fastest growing businesses on the Internet today, with $40 billion of a $600 billion advertising market already online. Microsoft is innovating rapidly to grow its share of this market by providing the advertising industry with a world-class online advertising platform and service. The Microsoft Ads Research & Development team is one of the most strategic and growing teams at Microsoft.

We are part of the Revenue and Relevance team, the Paid Search monetization branch. Our goal is to land OSD's FY13 Revenue-per-Search goals while maintaining a healthy marketplace: balancing Revenue and Relevance. We are responsible for creating healthy and profitable auctions for our users, our advertisers, and our publishers (including Bing and Yahoo).

We are seeking a program manager with smooth execution and a strong analytical background, preferably in both engineering and business. For this role, you need to be familiar with the tactical details of our monthly release cadence, while simultaneously focusing on the larger goals for the fiscal year - and influencing monthly releases towards those larger goals. You should be technical enough to understand the complexity of the search and advertising platforms and also have the business savvy to assess the impact of issues on the advertising environment. You must enjoy diving into data, assimilating various seemingly unrelated facts and articulating the conclusions. You must not mind rolling up your sleeves and writing database and BI queries to extract data if needed. Finally, given the dynamic nature of online services, you must enjoy working in a fast paced, results focused and competitive space. In this position, you will have first-hand exposure to a world-class search and advertising platform and the opportunity to make direct contributions to the success of historic partnerships like the Microsoft-Yahoo search alliance.


Required Qualifications

- A strong computer science or mathematical background
- A good grasp of software engineering principles and a minimum of three years’ experience in delivering high quality software solutions
- Exceptional problem solving skills, strong analytical skills and experience working with complex technical systems
- A demonstrated ability to come up to speed quickly on a new technical domain
Good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, ability to quickly engage with internal and external partners and drive to results
- The ability to work well in a team environment distributed across geographical locations.
- Having strong customer empathy is desired
Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas is a strong plus:
- Information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, statistics
- Extensive academic or industry experience in applying above expertise to large scale real-world data to solve real business problem.

Experience Required

- 3+ Years hands-on experience in owning and improving business processes
- 3+ Years hands-on experience working with large-scale real data sets to solve business problems involving data analysis, especially involving web data
- 3+ Years familiarity with data analysis tools and basic statistical knowledge
- 3+ Years’ experience in working with multiple teams.
