JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position provides leadership for quality functions with the supplier base. The position reports directly to the Quality Manager China while working closely with other representatives from Quality, Product Development, Manufacturing, and Sourcing groups, both domestically and internationally. Significant travel (25% to 50%) is required to visit vendors throughout China and other Asian countries.
The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) will be responsible for monitoring the performance of key suppliers to specification, written procedures, and established manufacturing and quality standards. The SQE will help review proposed mfg processes, suggest improvements, perform quality audits and inspections and review qualification results. The SQE will personally drive robust quality plans, audits, processes and reports directly to the Quality Manager China. When an issue is found, the SQE will work with the supplier, other representative and/or sub tier supplier to propose containment plans and acceptable rework as necessary. Additionally, the SQE will monitor and drive thorough Corrective Action and root causes analysis of any issue found as well as foster continuous improvement.
The main duties will be to:
? Lead and control Suppliers' Quality Control department and direct resources to support our sourced supply base.
? Establish process controls and inspection procedures that ensure defective products are prevented, or at least identified early in the process.
? Participate in joint development of plans with sourcing and engineering (quality, delivery, cost, NPD, supplier changes, etc.)
? Participate in engineering design reviews
? Ensure gauging, long term capability etc is in place and sustained
? Handle process/product validations and approvals (FAIR)
? Drive project and process improvements within supplier base to ensure high quality parts and finished goods.
? Drive projects, process improvements, and inspection protocols with sourced supply base for purchased finished goods.
? Perform physical audits of products and processes when needed.
? Assess and communicate project status, risks, and issues to the various members of the project team.
? Provide regular status reports to management regarding quality and delivery
? Conduct supplier audits and qualifications
? Provide feedback to supplier regarding improvement opportunities
? Work with suppliers to improve their systems
? Re-audit suppliers per schedule and provides updated feedback
? Lead efforts to correct issues with current product and the development of new products.
? Assist Supplier with Root Cause Analysis when issues arise (NSR & SCAR)
? Regular review and feedback to supplier
? Maintain action list for the above categories
? Review actions with suppliers on regular basis
? Visit suppliers to assess their capabilities and work with them to ensure they are meeting the product requirements.
? Train/Support suppliers in developing quality practices, processes, and philosophy.
? Evaluate (and possibly) find new suppliers for the business' projects as needed.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE / BACKGROUND:
? BSME and 3+ years experience in assembly manufacturing and/or quality fields.
? Any combination of education, training, and work experience which indicates to hiring authorities that an individual is likely to be successful in this position may be accepted in lieu of an engineering degree.
? Able to work independently with little direction.
? 3 - 5 years' experience in an engineering/Quality related field preferably in toys, power tools, consumer products or a similar industry. (Experience in small mechanical assemblies, injection molding, and/or die-casting is a plus.) Experience in a leadership role (2-3 years) is strongly preferred.
? Solid understanding of mechanical components and mechanisms.
? Knowledge of process control techniques (for example Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control, etc.) is required. Also required ability to teach and implement use of Control Plans, FMEA, QFD etc. Additional skills in Gemba Kaizan, Lean mfg etc. an asset.
? Must have good interpersonal skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Mandarin. Korean and/or Cantonese are a strong plus.
? Potentially required to travel an estimated 25% to 50% of the time.
? Must be able to travel freely within China. Must be able to travel outside of mainland China occasionally. (Probable destinations are the U.S.A., Hong Kong, and Korea.
? Experience and knowledge of Lean and/or Six Sigma are a plus.
