Describe the job purpose and why it exists

Elastic Bonding and Structural adhesive of Dow Automotive System (DAS) provides a broad portfolio of adhesive products serving automotive OEMs and Tiers. Products include cleaners, activators, primers, sealant, PU adhesives, epoxy crash durable adhesives for automotive window shield and car body applications.

DAS is looking for a Technical Service & Development Chemist specializing in adhesive formulation & process development to support the continuous growth opportunities of Elastic Bonding and Structural Adhesive for OEM in Pacific. Under the general direction of the Pacific marketing and technology strategy, the activities of this market-focused technical role will cover the tolling projects’ support, raw material qualification & localization, formulation and product development to meet the local COEM requirement based on our technology platform, and the product scale up & commercial launch in the market. The incumbent will interface with customer to define the CTQ and support the qualification/commercialization, work closely with TS&D/R&D peers in the Pacific and globally to leverage the technology and formulation development, adherence to manufacturing and product stewardship for the product scale-up and process optimization.


Education/Certification Requirements

The candidate should have at least a Master degree in Polymer Science/Mechanical Engineering/Material Science or related disciplines. Familiarity with Project Management is a plus.

Job information and working conditions (e.g. physical requirements, preferred working experience, job/project duration, language requirement, travel requirement, working schedule options, etc.)

Minimum 5 years’ application and formulation development experience in chemicals or adhesive-related field with active customer interaction. The production process and engineering expertise of adhesives will be preferable. The automotive industry experience is valuable. Broad knowledge of thermosetting formulation (phenolic, epoxy and/or PU) is a plus.

The candidate must be a native Chinese speaker with good command in English and good computer skills. Travel is required to various locations within the Pacific but main area of focus will be in China. Work location will be in Shanghai, China.

Goals and Competencies

List examples of goals that would be typical for this job

1. Lead the product scale-up and process optimization of tolling projects. Working with global manufacturing and Tech Center, influence the tolling partner to upgrade their process capability and continuously improve the process.
2. Lead the raw material localization program aligned with product manager’s roadmap.
3. Collaborate closely with regional Elastic Bonding & Structural Adhesive marketing to develop the project pipeline and multi-generation product plan for the region.
4. Lead and deliver the new product development (modification of existing products) for prioritized projects by using scientific methodology.
5. Act as Product Responsible Person for the new product scale up and qualification, trouble-shooting support until the successful commercial launch at customers.
6. Design the experiment plan in the lab and it execution. Ensure compliance to EHS standards.
7. Generate high quality technical report for the development projects; conduct technical symposiums for the industry meetings, and to prepare technical literatures/publications. for the new product promotion.
