Amazon Mobile Shopping is one of Amazon’s fastest growing new businesses. The mobile shopping team builds world-class customer experiences in all Amazon locales. Focused on mobile commerce, the team builds mobile shopping experiences across platforms and shopping applications (apps) on Smartphone and mobile computing platforms including BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Windows Phone 7, Kindle Fire, and iPad. Amazon’s experience in retail, technology, digital content, and mobile services provides a strong foundation for future development in this arena, and we’re moving aggressively to build new and innovative solutions for our customers.


Amazon Mobile Shopping Beijing Development Center is seeking a very strong technical leader (Software Development Manager) to manage and grow an engineering team. This requires a thorough knowledge of what it takes to develop scalable, extensible technology, as well as how to structure and develop organizations. This presents a significant intellectual, technical and operational challenge. The ideal candidate will be clearly passionate about the large opportunity that Amazon Mobile Shopping presents. This person has thrived and succeeded in delivering high quality solutions in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift fast. The position demands excellent technical skills and knowledge coupled with strong leadership, planning, and management abilities. Knowledge and experience with one or more development methodologies, and experience developing engineering process is required. Knowledge of mobile platforms, particularly Android-based platforms, is highly desired.


This role requires working closely with product management to define strategy and requirements, and leading development teams from design through delivery and subsequent operation. This position involves regular communication with senior management on status, risks and product strategy. Excellent listening, writing skills and very strong technical competency are essential. Being hands-on, ability to dive deep on software engineering (including code reviews, design reviews, and operational reviews) is critical to success in this role. The candidate must also drive the project progress through light-weight management mechanisms which allow full transparency into the team's day to day operations.


The ideal candidate has experience through multiple complete product development cycles, possesses superior analytical abilities and product judgment. Ideal candidates have experience leading medium (10+) sized development teams, defining projects and features, coordinating efforts to scope, schedule, and deploy new features sets; as well as analyzing cost/benefit of feature selection and communicating results throughout the organization.


Knowledge of the following is required: product development (including C++, Java, XML, messaging protocols, and Web Services), build processes, project management, release schedules. The ideal candidate will have 7+ or more years of relevant work experience in internet-related software development management in a consumer applications environment. An bachelor degree in computer science or a related discipline is required. 5+ years managing people is required.


Key Responsibilities:
? Translation of complex functional and technical requirements into detailed project plans and schedules; manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team by defining, implementing and maintaining a coherent, progressive development strategy for our product line.
? Responsible for the over-all systems development life cycle
? Delivery of quality applications on-time and on-budget
? Management and execution against project plans and delivery commitments
? Management of departmental resources, staffing, and enhancing and maintaining a best- of-class engineering team
? Evolution of the software engineering practice within the organization, including better reporting, tools, and evolution of development methodology
? Work closely with the architects to develop the best technical design and approach for product development
? Maintain current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology
? Continue to build an effective development organization by driving the recruiting and hiring of senior level engineers, developing and managing the group, and conducting performance reviews of team members
? Create and execute appropriate quality plans, project plans, test strategies and processes for development activities in concert with business and project management efforts.
? Develop and execute unit testing strategy and processes.
? Drive and manage the bug triage process, represent development team in project meetings to ensure efficient testing and bug fixing process, and be an effective advocate for the development group
? Report on status of product quality to management, customer support and product teams via rigorous execution of detailed plans and accurate reporting of test cases executed, bugs discovered, bugs fixed, etc.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical discipline
- 7+ years of relevant engineering experience
- 5+ years people management experience
- Experience with OOD and object oriented languages
- Experience with mobile software development
- Experience with mobile software platforms (Android, iPhone, Windows Phone)
