GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual will perform metallurgical investigations of the scope (as detailed below in technical requirements) in response to customers' needs as conveyed by product/application engineering and internal research and development groups.
TECHNICAL:
The individual will perform metallurgical investigations but not limited on bearings, bushings, pistons, piston rings, liners, camshafts, crankshafts, mating engine components, and transmission components. A familiarity with some or all of these components is required. Occasionally, the individual will be required to examine other components unrelated to above listed components. In these investigations, the individual will obtain any necessary information to perform the analysis.
The individual will perform tribological investigations of pre- and post-test bushing and bearing samples from engine and bench tests, including wear, seizure, fatigue and dynamometer tests. These investigations will entail combining knowledge of materials, oils, surface phenomena and part and assembly configurations.
The individual performs metallurgical investigations including sample preparations, data acquisition, documentation, and report writing. The job requires familiarity with the operation of metallurgical laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, SEM/EDS, optical microscopes, stereomicroscopes, mounting presses, and polishing equipment. The individual will be required to interpret data, determine cause and effect relationships, and formulate failure scenarios.
The individual will be required to follow all quality and EHS procedures and be a team player.
COMMERCIAL:
Handle the tooling, fixture and consumable material purchase, receiving and storage.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's Degree in metallurgy or materials engineering required. Master's Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 5 years technical experience or background of properties and processes related to steel, copper and aluminum. Experience with material characterization, failure analysis and tribology required.

Familiarity with internal combustion engine powertrain components.
Familiarity with the operation of metallurgical laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, SEM/EDS, microscopes, hardness testing equipment, mounting presses, and polishing equipment.
Ability to perform material characterizations and failure analyses. Experience with metallurgical sample preparation and evaluation.
Ability to perform tribological investigations by combining knowledge of material properties, oils, surface phenomena and part/assembly configurations.
An understanding of the materials and metallurgical processes involved in the production of powertrain parts.
An understanding of the use of copper-based and aluminum-based materials as they apply to bearing and bushing applications.
Ability to complete projects, with no supervision, once the parameters of the project areset and interpret data, determine cause and effect relationships, and formulate failure scenarios.
Each employee has the authority to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to the product, process and quality system and has the authority tostop further work on non-conforming suspect product until the deficiency or conditions have been corrected.
