Microbiologist
We currently have an immediate opportunity for a MICROBIOLOGIST to join the RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DIVISION at our location in SHANGHAI.
Job Responsibility
We are seeking a highly motivated, goal-oriented candidate who will assist in the development of the activities of our newly created Microbiology Laboratory in Shanghai, with the main purpose of studying the biological and antimicrobial properties of fragrance and flavor ingredients. The incumbent will work as part of an innovation project team and, as such, is expected to be able to propose and carry out both independent and team-oriented research projects. For this post, excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. Good knowledge of Mandarin is also essential. The ability to interface with colleagues from R&D and other Firmenich Divisions, as well as with external collaboration partners, is also a requirement.
From the technical point of view, the qualified individual must be familiar with microbiological techniques, including:
- the isolation and cultivation of microbes under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions
- the identification of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms (API galleries, 16S rDNA sequencing)
- the quantification of antimicrobial activity through Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Bacterial Contact Time (BCT) tests
- the establishment of synergism testing methodologies (FIC index)
- the mapping of bacterial microflora through metagenomic techniques
Knowledge of basic molecular biology (gene cloning, protein expression and purification, DNA and protein electrophoresis) and enzymology principles (enzyme kinetics, enzyme inhibition) is also required.
Priority will be given to candidates who are familiar with microbial physiology and metabolism and have proven hands-on experience with automated liquid handling systems.
Computer literacy is essential. Minimal requirements include:
- user knowledge of the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Explorer)
- ability to perform literature and patent searches
- ability to perform protein and nucleic acids identity searches
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Determine the antimicrobial activity of substances
- Develop in vitro enzymatic assays
- Coordinate the work of laboratory technicians
- Guarantee quality and reproducibility of data
- Ensure data interpretation and improvement of current technologies and equipment
- Write research reports and publications
- Report work progress at project meetings and contribute to decision-making processes
- Maintain awareness of relevant knowledge and technologies
- Apply knowledge to recognize problems and find solutions
- Manage external collaboration projects
- Establish and nurture a network with key internal business partners
- Support line management in the hiring of the Microbiology Lab personnel
Profile
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biochemistry or Cellular Biology
- Fluent English, written and spoken
- 5+ years of relevant experience in an academic or industrial microbiology laboratory
- Good knowledge of Mandarin is essential
- Experience in people management
- Hands-on experience in microbiology
- Practical understanding of assay development and optimization
- Ability to work independently, good organizational skills and goal-oriented
- Curious, open-minded with excellent communication skills
