JOB OBJECTIVES:
1. Develops and provides technical solutions for complex product development projects using PhaseGate Innovation Process.
2. Improves existing and develops new formulation additives, such as dispersants, slip & levelling agents, defoamers, rheology modifiers, etc., in support of our business growth strategy in Asia Pacific.
3. Supports production trouble-shooting and manufacturing problem-solving to ensure product quality and consistency, and to reduce or eliminate the production of off-spec materials.
4. Interacts, communicates and collaborates with key customers to better understand unmet customer needs and identify product development opportunities.
5. Leads lab team and cross-functional Phase-Gate Innovation project teams to achieve project objectives in a timely manner.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Research, Product Development and Production Support:
a) Collaborates with business partners and Production for new product development and supporting manufacturing problem solving and optimization
b) Improves existing and develops new formulation additives, such as dispersants, slip & levelling agents, defoamers, rheology modifiers, etc., in support of our business growth strategy in Asia Pacific
c) Works closely with our Nanjing Additives Production Plant and our global production engineers and R&D experts in formulation additives to support
- transfer of ED2 (formulation additives) products from Europe to our Nanjing Plant ;
- qualification of local raw materials
- production trouble-shooting and root-cause analysis to ensure product quality and consistency, and to reduce or eliminate the production of off-spec materials
- development of new production processes for higher productivity, safer production processes, increased usage of manufacturing assests
d) Analyse assigned research projects, usually complex in nature, to determine what must be done to solve the problems in question. Plan the methods necessary for their solution. Conducts necessary literature and patent searches and assess utility of information for projects
e) Writes comprehensive reports and evaluations on data obtained from experimentation and, if necessary, orally present observations, conclusions and recommendations to persons in areas of the company’s interests.
f) Correlates laboratory experience in the development of new materials, services and processes, and aids with progress during experimental production stages into full production and/or service
g) Stays current with developments in the areas of chemistry/engineering for formulation additives
2. Lab Team Leadership and PhaseGate Innovation Project Management:
a) Leads the formulation additives development team and develops new products that meet or exceed customer requirement.
b) Manages PhaseGate projects and cross-functional and cross-regional project teams to achieve deliverables/targets in a timely manner
c) Organizes and supervises roles, responsibilities and work routines within the lab team
d) Directs and provides required training for the work of one or more chemists or technicians and supervises visiting students or scientists on temporary assignments
e) Contributes and adheres to Safety and Environmental standards of the Corporation, Division and Site
f) Not an individual contributor, but be someone that helps others and the organization to be successful
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Education: PhD or Master’s degree in Chemistry (preferably polymer-related or organic synthesis fields) or Chemical Engineering, PhD preferred
2. Work Experience: with at least 8 years’ experience of conducting scientific experiments in chemical labs (including study period)
- PhD’s degree with at least 2 years industrial experience, overseas experience preferred. Experiences in polymerization, controlled/living radical polymerization, coating formulation and performance testing are highly desirable.
- Master’s degree with at least 5 years industrial experience, overseas experience preferred. Experiences in polymerization, controlled/living radical polymerization, coating formulation and performance testing are highly desirable.
3. Technical and Professional Knowledge: fluent English (reading, writing and presenting).
