Research Square is home to American Journal Experts (AJE) and the Research Square preprint platform. As a subsidiary of Springer Nature, we are hiring a General Manager, Greater China to lead our company in our largest and most important market.

Research Square is passionate about making research communication faster, fairer, and more useful. Since 2004, AJE has provided manuscript preparation services to hundreds of thousands of researchers and continues to help researchers successfully communicate their work. Launched in 2018, our Research Square platform is the fastest growing preprint server in the world. With P&L responsibility, this role will build a market-based business strategy and lead a team to execute it to achieve our long-term business objectives.  Key metrics include revenue, EBITDA and market share growth.

Research Solutions is a new and growing division within Springer Nature Research Publishing with the aspiration to become the number one global resource to serve and support researchers and organisations at every stage of the research process. Our current solutions include editing services (AJE), the Research Square preprint platform, training services, data services, and post-publication services. However, we also aim to further serve the needs of researchers and organisations through building new solutions and partnering with third parties. While your main focus will be Research Square, one-fifth of your role will be delivering the wider Research Solutions strategy in the Greater China market.    


Job Responsibilities

Reporting into Research Square’s Chief Revenue Officer with a dotted line to Springer Nature’s Managing Director, Greater China, you will serve as our most senior leader in the Greater China market:

  • Leading Research Square’s company mission, vision, and strategy in Greater China market
  • Contribute and supporting Springer Nature’s Research Solutions’ strategy in Greater China market, specifically editing, preprint, and training services          
  • P&L accountability
  • Serve as external face of the business in China market, and office leader in Beijing
  • Market-based business strategy and execution to achieve our mid, long-term business objectives
  • Revenue ownership through marketing, business development, sales, account management and ecommerce functions, to maximize the growth ambition  
  • Develop, maintain and oversee all commercial relationships with institutions, societies, and industry partners located in China, across both AJE and Research Square brands, -leverage and collaborate  with SN sales organization
  • Perform leadership of the localization of the WFOE, also including HR, Finance and other market-specific business needs, ensure the WFOE set up is compliant while can fully support the business’ operational activities.
  • Consolidate and provide timely insights and  market intelligence in Greater China in the researcher service space.  Propose adaptive tactics where is appropriate
  • Input on product development, operations and customer support according to the diversified needs of the market
  • Build, lead, motivate and develop a qualified team to constantly deliver the key performance indicators.


The ideal candidate has a strong commercial orientation, and will aim to accelerate growth via commercial relationships in China, including:


  • Business Development: Identify and establish new relationships that expand our reach, particularly in adjacent technology, publishing, societies and associations
  • Institutional Selling: Manage a team that drives revenue growth from institutions, departments and labs.  This includes establishing new institutional relationships and expanding existing relationships.
  • Channel Sales & Enablement: Enable external institutional sales partners to more effectively drive sales growth.
  • Partner Management: Deepen relationships with existing publishing partners, societies and other organizations. 
  • Account Management: Manage a team of Account Managers responsible for growing our existing lab, department and institutional group accounts by introducing new solutions, cross-selling into adjacent departments, or upselling at enterprise level.


Position Requirements:

  • Fluent in both Chinese and English
  • Bachelor’s degree. MBA or Master’s preferred.
  • Experience leading high-growth teams with P&L responsibility
  • Strong interpersonal and influential communication skills, with effective negotiation and presentation skills.
  • 10 or more years of sales or business development experience in author services industry or adjacent industry to include publishing, global research, pharmaceutical, etc.
  • International experience working with internal stakeholders and clients globally
  • Track record of closing deals and leading teams that exceed revenue targets.
  • Experience implementing and managing WFOE
  • Flexible in nature to accommodate new program growth and change.
