The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit, non-governmental
environmental organization established in 1970 in New York City. We are headquartered in
New York and have offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago,
Montana State, and Beijing, China. With more than 1.3 million members and online
supporters, NRDC’s staff of over 400 environmental lawyers, experts, and policy analysts
work to protect the world’s environment for the benefit of public health through policy
research and advocacy, law, and public awareness raising. In China, NRDC has
collaborated with many government agencies, research institutes, and industrial and civil
society partners to promote energy efficiency, green buildings, clean energy technology
development, sustainable urban development, corporate responsible sourcing, and
environmental laws and regulations.

Position Summary:
NRDC is looking for an experienced professional to carry out, and in some cases to lead,
several NRDC’s sustainable city initiatives, especially on building energy efficiency and
green buildings in China. The incumbent will be based in Beijing and a member of the
China Program. He/she shall report to the Director of China Sustainable Cities Project.

Major Responsibilities
1. Coordinate and implement initiatives and projects in the areas of building energy
efficiency, green building, urban smart growth, and low carbon urban planning
(hereafter “the scope of work”);
2. Prepare proposals, reports and communication materials within the scope of work, in
English and/or Chinese as required;
3. Help the Director of China Sustainable Cities Project in developing and maintaining
strategic partnerships with key Chinese and international organizations;
4. Help the Director of China Sustainable Cities Project in fundraising;
5. Conduct policy research within the scope of work to support project implementation
and communication;
6. Contribute to China Program’s overall strategy development, priority setting, crossproject/
program collaboration, partnership building, and new opportunity identification;
7. Attend and/or speak at conferences and workshops relevant to NRDC and the scope of
work, as required;
8. Help foster team work, high performance and accountability.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
1. Deep understanding of the issues that fall within the scope of work in both the U.S.
and China, as well as internationally;
2. Strong knowledge of building energy efficiency, green building technology, smart
growth, and low-carbon development;
3. Strong ability in project and partnership development, as well as project
management;
4. Strong policy research and analytical skills;
5. Fluency in Chinese and English, with excellent English and Chinese writing ability
and good oral communications skills;
6. Dedication to environmental protection and self-motivation;
7. Commitment to nonprofit/public interest advocacy;
8. Strong interpersonal skills and a team player;
9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work under pressure;
10. Familiarity with working in an international work environment.

Qualifications:
Advanced degree(s) in building technologies or other relevant fields; about 5 years of
relevant work experience.
