A.Main Purpose of the Role
?Development Engineers are responsible for carrying out new product development projects assigned to them by the Product Development Manager, developing and bringing to market new products as required by customers. These innovation activities should be part of the business growth strategy of the company, and the Development Engineers therefore have to have a good understanding of the business dimensions, as well as work closely with Marketing and Application colleagues in the execution of their function.
?As this Job Description covers the roles of Chief Development Engineer, Principal Development Engineer, Senior Development Engineer and Development Engineer, it should be recognised that the different levels and grading reflect differences in seniority and the level of responsibility in carrying out the job junctions, as well as the degree of independence of the job holder vs close supervision required.
B.Key Areas of Accountability:
?Participation in the identification and definition of customer and market requirements. Participate in appropriate visits and other forms of contacts with sales force and customers.
?Evaluate the feasibility and profitability of study and type development projects assigned by the Product Development Manager. Carry out these study and type development projects under the supervision of the PDM, delivering as output manufacturable and good quality products meeting customer and market requirements, within the timescales and product costings specified in the approved S-gate documents. Provide technical support to Wafer Fab and Assembly Centres for recently introduced new products.
?Through a good understanding of semiconductor physics and state-of-the-art technology used in the industry, generate ideas for new projects and improvements to product design. Participate in ideas generation for other areas of interest to the business (e.g. applications, marketing, quality, delivery, logistics and production issues).
?Keep up to date with developments of power products, including an understanding of customer requirements in relevant market sector through close contact with research organisations, our own and 3rd party wafer fabs, back-end operation team and technical colleagues in subcon assembly centres, 3rd party partners active in the Power Bipolar arena as well as the Applications and Marketing functions serving the business.
?Provide support to Marketing by: answering specific customer enquiries and complaints; provide suitable customer samples of new types as requested; assist Marketing in improving our professional image through contributions to promotional literature and making presentations to customers and sales engineers, as appropriate.
?Achieving a better understanding of competitors' strengths, weaknesses and technologies, through a study of their published data and other literature and analysis of device samples, in conjunction with Applications, Measurements, Package and Technology development groups, and thereby contribute to defining the future business direction.
?Working together with colleagues in wafer fab and back-end operations to ensure that new products use appropriate manufactural processes, and to obtain from these departments (acting as "customer") the needed output in terms of new technology, processes and packages to service the needs of the market.

?WeEn is a major international supplier to the Power Bipolar market. In certain segments, our Portfolios and technology put us in joint-top position in the market.
?The markets we are serving are basically White Goods, Home appliance, Power Supply and Lighting. Competition is keen in the market; therefore, continuous innovation in improving the performance and reducing costs of our products is a key factor for maintaining and improving our competitive position.
?WeEn provides products which are key electronic components to many consumer products. We have to manage the business creation, business fulfilment (including manufacturing) and after sales service. Main competitors are ST, Infineon, Vishay, Renesas, Fairchild and some local Chinese suppliers.
D. Key Issues Facing the Role (Development items):
?The job-holders need to have a good understanding of both the technical and business dimensions of Power Semiconductors. Experience in the design of Thyristors, Bipolar Transistors, Rectifiers would be particularly desirable. The major challenge is to use their technical knowledge and project planning to achieve success in the development projects and deliver beneficial and practical advancements to the business which would not otherwise be possible. The advancement may be measured in various ways such as increase in business, penetration of new markets, innovative sales, profitability improvement, etc.
E. Key Decisions (Development items):
For Development Engineers most of the key decisions listed below will be taken under the guidance of the Product Development Manager and CTO. Chief, Principal and Senior Development Engineers are expected to contribute with independent judgement to these decisions:

? Choice of technologies and designs for new products
? Improvements and cost reduction activities on existing products
? Investigations into new technology and new application areas
? Responses to customers’ technical enquiries
