Position: Deputy Director, Career Development Office

Location: Ningbo, China

Qualifications:

Essential:
- Degree or equivalent; appropriate postgraduate or advanced professional qualification or equivalent;
- Domain-specific knowledge: career services resources, tools, information, and programs; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques;
- Strong communication: possess strong oral, written and listening skills; articulates complex procedures clearly; has the ability to establish interpersonal rapport and relate to individuals from a wide range of background and cultures;
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Mandarin;
- Strong computer skills: including the ability to collect and analyze statistical data; competent with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint functionality, or is able to learn new programs; computer proficiency, proofreading skills, and demonstrated experience in the use of technology;
- Strong leadership skills: serves as a strategic leader to guide the service and campus toward meeting its placement goals, overcoming placement obstacles, and creating talent pipelines;
- Well organized: strong organizational and planning skills and efficiency in handling multiple projects;
- Ability to coach and mentor: to be a mentor for careers team, focused on the professional training and development of team members so that they can grow their experience and expand their competencies;
- Strong customer-focus: proven ability to understand students' and clients' needs and deliver a tailored consultancy based on that assessment;
- Team player: ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multi-cultural environment including students, parents, alumni, faculty, administrators, and employers; places a higher emphasis on contributions to a work team than on receiving recognition for personal contribution; has the ability to work in collaboration with multiple teams, such as Faculty, Admissions, Provost Office;
- Substantial and in depth management experience at a strategic level in graduate talent recruitment and/or an employability service;
- Working within a cross cultural environment;
- Experience of developing and delivering successful communications strategies within organisations and to external stakeholders;
- Excellent knowledge of careers and employability service and a demonstrable ability;
- Decision making skill and enthusiasm;
- Willingness to travel for work related issues; work at weekends or during holidays occasionally if requested.

Desirable:
- Membership of appropriate professional body and pro-actively engaging with that body at a national representative level;
- Qualification gained either from a UK University or including UK university experience;
- Appropriate qualification in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance;
- Fluency in additional languages relevant to our employer engagement and student body;
- Experience of working with or in UK or similar Higher Education models and demonstrable interest and commitment to the aims of HE and to supporting student development and achievement.

Salary & Benefits: 187,000RMB - 233,000RMB per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Strategic contribution, implementation and formulation
- Support the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus in developing strategy to support students and graduates in realizing their career ambitions. This would include developing close links with academic colleagues, senior management and colleagues in the UK and Malaysia as well as linking with the Nottingham Advantage Award team in the UK;
- Develop annual goals and objectives of the office according to the university strategy as well as concise agreements with different academic units to ensure effective delivery at a school level.
2. Employability service development
- Working with the team, ensure provision of different routes for students to develop employability and other employer-relevant skills through workshops, individual guidance, written material and supporting the Nottingham Advantage Award.
3. Placement and internships
- Working with the team to develop bespoke events and deliver such events to ensure graduates have the best information regarding future opportunities in order to make an informed decision;
- Responsible for overseeing an internship programme with the goal of converting these opportunities into gainful employment.
- Contribute to the development of an online career management system that is in operation across the three campuses, working with colleagues in the UK and Malaysia.
4. Alumni relationships
- Work with colleagues to provide career services to alumni, supporting both student and alumni employment.
5. Internal stakeholder management
- To continually renew and develop relationships and partnerships with the academic community and other key stakeholders in order to best meet our students' needs;
- To develop closer integration of offer across the Careers Services at Malaysia and the UK;
- To work with and provide guidance to a UK funded and managed Shanghai based employer engagement role;
- To contribute to management team discussions and subsequent decisions at the campus from time to time as requested. This would include delivering bespoke projects as requested.
6. External stake-holder management
- To represent the services as appropriate at conferences, seminars and other such events to promote the global profile of the university. This would include seeking to develop our own events that encourage and further develop engagement with employers and our role as the leading service in Chinese HE.
7. Employer relationships development
- To develop, maintain and enhance a network of employers, developing an in-depth understanding of their recruitment needs, identifying opportunities for graduate role and internships;
- Actively and routinely seeks employer feedback and researches industry trends and ensure such information informs delivery and is circulated across the academic community and management team of the campus as appropriate.
8. Professional Development
- To gain a thorough understanding of the careers and employability service, concepts of careers education and careers development learning and best practice in employer engagement;
- To be a mentor for careers team focused on the professional training and development of team members so that they can grow their experience and expand their competencies.
9. Any other activity to ensure the quality of the careers and employability services as well as that of the campus and institution.
