QUALIFICATIONS
Appropriate tertiary qualifications in the sciences.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Experience as a technician in a high school laboratory or similar institution (strongly desired);
Good communication skills in an English-speaking international environment with fluency in written and spoken English along with scientific technical language ;
Experience in the use of international and local standards for use/storage of chemicals and relevant health and safety standards
Knowledge and experience in the legal disposal of chemicals
Basic computer skills, particularly the use of Word and Excel;
Experience in preparation of equipment orders in a science or science related area.

SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED
Skillful in the use of specialist science equipment including cathode ray oscilloscopes, compound microscopes & data loggers;
Working knowledge of international and local standards for the use & storage of laboratory chemicals and relevant health and safety standards ;
Experience in the use, preparation, storage and disposal of laboratory chemicals;
Experience in preparation and maintenance of science inventories;
Experience in preparation of science laboratory equipment purchase orders.

PERSONAL SKILLS
Ability to work effectively both autonomously & as part of a team;
Initiative;
Good time management & problem solving skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to the Head of Science, the laboratory technician will be responsible for:

1. Preparation of Equipment and resources for practical science lessons and assessments which includes
i. Conferring with teachers regarding equipment orders;
ii. Preparation and setting up of equipment for practical lessons and assessments;
iii. Preparation of chemical solutions as required ;
iv. Assisting teachers with science demonstrations as required;
v. Clearing away, cleaning and proper storage of all equipment after practical lessons and assessments;
vi. Monitoring of usage of consumables and re-ordering as required;
vii. Building and maintaining scientific equipment;
viii. Advising teachers on possible equipment and demonstrations;

2. Maintenance of Laboratories and Preparatory Rooms which includes:
i. Ensuring labs and prep rooms are maintained in a safe, clean and good condition;
ii. Monitoring fixtures and fittings such as gas taps, water taps, gas bottles and electrical equipment, and organizing for repairs/ replacement as required;
iii. Maintaining an up to date knowledge of local laws regarding the ordering/storage/use and disposal of chemicals and advising teachers of the legalities of particular equipment and chemicals;

3. Undertaking general laboratory duties, which include:
i. Producing/maintaining up-to-date inventories of all chemicals/items/equipment;
ii. Improving and maintaining records of equipment orders and files of purchase orders, practical instructions, and catalogues.
iii. Provide for regular servicing/maintenance of equipment (electrical equipment, microscopes, bunsen burners, etc)
iv. Maintenance of science teacher resources (CD-roms, text books, etc)
v. Overseeing the general safety and security of the labs and preparation rooms during school hours
vi. Keeping track of departmental equipment (videos, etc)
vii. Liaising with HOD &/or the Business Manager regarding consumables and equipment expenditure and the departmental budget.
viii. Maintaining an up to date record of departmental local order expenditure.
