The Bing infrastructure team is looking for talented, hands-on software engineers to work on Cosmos, the cloud storage and compute engine that powers all of Microsoft’s Online Services.
Cosmos has been leading the charge on ‘Big Data’ for years. Few other cloud computing services in the world can boast the scale of Cosmos - every ten minutes, Cosmos grows more than the Library of Congress grows in three months.
Come and work on a massively-parallel supercomputer comprised of tens of thousands of commodity servers, coordinating to provide vast reliable storage and stunning computation power. Every day we ingest hundreds of terabytes of data from Bing, AdCenter, MSN, and Windows Live. Every day we run thousands of computations that read and write petabytes of data. The underlying service needs to be unimaginably fast, and it needs to be rock-solid reliable.
The Cosmos Team is on path to scale to exabytes of storage in coming years. Our users run computations over the sum corpora of human knowledge - multiple copies of the world-wide-web and all of the structured data/imagery linked from it. A ‘small’ computation for us reasons over terabytes of storage within a few seconds; computations that read petabytes are becoming more and more common.
What’s next after you have one of the world’s largest batch-processing systems? We are designing a brand new execution paradigm for interactive data processing pipelines and ad hoc data mining. What will we process? Multiple complete copies of the World Wide Web, annotated with structured data, social network updates, geospatial/map data, and semantic data. Want scale? We’ll be doing tens of billions of updates per day and trillions of reads, distributed across tens of thousands of servers.
If you think you have what it takes to work in a fast paced environment building the world’s largest supercomputer, then this is the gig for you.
Requirements
· Deep expertise in systems-level programming: storage and file systems, networking, and transaction processing.
· Not intimidated by debugging across tens of thousands of PCs.
· Outstanding coding chops in C++ and C#.
· Great design and problem solving skills, with a strong bias for quality and engineering excellence at scale. Our code runs on thousands of machines on multiple continents, so bring your ‘A’ game.
· Demonstrated experience shipping products - on time, no bugs.
· 5-7 years of industry experience.
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (Masters or PhD preferred).
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Experience in distributed systems, database/repository technology, and multi-threaded programming is strongly preferred.
