The OSD infrastructure team is looking for talented, hard driving software engineers to work on Cosmos, the cloud storage and computational engine that powers Bing and all of the Online Services Division. Cosmos is a massively-parallel supercomputer comprised of tens of thousands of commodity PC’s, coordinating to provide vast reliable storage and stunning computation power. We are storing and processing hundreds of Petabytes and rapidly growing into Exabytes territory. Think about it, where else could you deal with the Exabyte scale systems?
There are numerous engineering challenges we are looking at currently.
- How do we make Exabyte size storage reliable, never lose any data while running it on the big farm of the unreliable commodity computers?
- How do we achieve high levels of availability - cluster is always up and running?
- How do we do it blazingly fast on the scale of tens of thousands of machines?
- How do we approach it in a cost efficient way? You can imagine how much it cost to build and power up such a large system, and even small savings here and there will be magnified into significant numbers by our enormous scale.
- How does one manage such supercomputer in an easy and intuitive way?
- How could we safely put sensitive data into this system and protect privacy of it?
Sounds interesting and challenging? It definitely is.
This position requires a deep interest in distributed computing such as: fault tolerance, network, multi-threading and storage technologies like databases and file systems.
Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of C/C++ or C#, 3+ years of industry experience and strong communication skills.
