JOB PURPOSE: To drive collaboration among engineering personnel, business unit CPPD Team Leader, Process Control Engineers (PCE) and suppliers for purchased components on matters regarding Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), Continuous Product Improvement (CPI), engineering changes, deviations, supplier designs and specification approvals while meeting NPI cost goals. Deliver Global Leverage with Local Service Excellence. Manages the execution of all purchased component deliverables in support of CPPD activities.

JOB DUTIES:

The primary responsibility of this position is to drive collaboration among design engineers, business unit CPPD Team Leaders, suppliers and PCEs for successful NPI, re-sourcing and execution of non-NPI design changes. Provides coordination support during start-up & NPI activities. Accountable for robust, timely completion of all Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) steps by various internal and external personnel for purchased components and materials for each CPPD team. Responsible for entering status of supplier related APQP activities to NPI tracking tool (CPPD Workflow).

Attends NPI/CPPD meetings as the primary representative of Global Purchasing. This individual is responsible for communicating pertinent information from CPPD meetings to PCE and for coordinating meetings among PCE, suppliers and engineering. Arranges joint development meetings between suppliers & design engineering for early supplier engagement in Caterpillar designs. Ensures frequent collaboration to ensure design for manufacturability, quality and cost.

Manages and reports applicable APQP metrics to CPPD team leader or NPI manager. Coordinates process control engineers to ensure complete category and supplier coverage of APQP steps. Provides properly timed coaching to CPPD teams regarding APQP tools and support processes. Communicates PCE and supplier activities to NPI/CPPD teams. Ensures that Caterpillar provides suppliers with proper APQP inputs to plan for zero defects.

Ensures that a supplier is selected and purchase order launched for every component according to the strategic sourcing plans. Holds category manager accountable for any components without a supplier selected.

The position manages the completion of its own work assignments and coordinates work with others. This position is typically co-located with engineering.

NPI/CPPD Team Design Engineering

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

Required:

Five to 7 years of job-related experience; a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), preferably in engineering; an engineering or project management background; familiarity with APQP processes used to manage components and assemblies through NPI & re-sourcing cycles; very good interpersonal, communication and project management skills; strong leadership ability to develop cooperative working relationships with others, inside and outside of Caterpillar

Highly Desirable:

Knowledge of the tools and techniques of 6 Sigma DMEDI methodology likely attained through prior completion of Black Belt training; quality engineering certification; supervisory and operations experience.
